Retired Civil Servant in Magetan Loses IDR 104.5 Million Due to Scam, Here's How It Works

Magetan – A retired civil servant (PNS) in Magetan, East Java, lost Rp. 104.5 million from his account due to a fraudulent act using the method of updating data.

The victim, Sunarti (59), a resident of KPR Asabri, Tawanganom Subdistrict, Magetan District, did not expect her savings to disappear in an instant.

Sunarti admitted that she initially received a call from someone claiming to be a PT Taspen officer named Putri Aprilia. The perpetrator asked Sunarti to update the data.

"I was contacted by someone who claimed to be from Taspen. Because I was a bit suspicious, I asked to hang up because I was also in a meeting. As soon as I hung up, my phone could not be used," said Sunarti, Thursday (3/27).

Previously, Sunarti had received calls from unknown numbers since Wednesday (26/3), but she ignored them.

However, the next day, the perpetrator contacted him again and sent a WhatsApp message with his personal data that looked accurate.

"The data sent is all correct, exactly as I have it. On behalf of Taspen, everything matches," he added.

The perpetrator then directed Sunarti to install a certain application to update the data. At that time, she began to feel suspicious and decided to hang up. However, her cellphone suddenly hung and could not be used.

An uneasy feeling made Sunarti immediately go to Bank BPD Jatim to check her account. How shocked she was when she found out that her money had been drained.

"I went straight to the bank, asked to be checked, it turned out that my savings had been drained of Rp 104.5 million. Only Rp 47 thousand was left," he said.

After checking, the money had been transferred to a BRI Bank account. Sunarti asked the bank to immediately block the recipient's account, but the request could not be processed.

"The officer said no, even though the money had just been transferred. I was even given proof of the transaction from Bank Jatim," said Sunarti disappointedly.

The tens of millions of rupiah came out of her account on Thursday morning at around 09.30 WIB. What was more surprising, Sunarti admitted that she did not receive any transaction notification on her cellphone.

"After the phone hangs, once it can be used again, all the data sent is gone. The log list and the numbers that contacted me are also gone," he explained.

Sunarti finally reported the case to the police. She hopes that similar incidents do not happen to other people.

"I have reported it to the police. It turns out that there are several other residents who have been hit by the same method. Hopefully there will be a solution soon," he hoped. (Gal/PK)
